Located in Omori, south-west of Lake Taupo, Hick Bros was responsible for repairing slip damage along Omori Road. The contract consisted of the supply, construction and verification testing for steel cantilever retaining walls and ground anchors in addition to the replacement of the existing stormwater inlet chamber.

The construction of the retaining wall  involved installation of temporary construction benches followed by the installation of bored piles, drainage, lagging and ground anchors. To address the poor ground conditions, we teamed up with the geotechnical engineer to adjust methodologies and installed pile casings to make the wall more stable. The road is the only access point for vehicles to the Omori and Kurutau townships so effective traffic management and timely completion was crucial to the success of the repair. The final walk over of the repair was performed with no 'snags' identified resulting in an extremely satisfied client and engineer.

Project Highlights

Health & Safety

Temporary works, involving technical scaffolding, along with extensive traffic management was required to allow access with minimal impediment for the duration of the project.

Value-added engineering

We worked closely with the engineer to develop and adjust methodologies as difficult ground conditions were encountered.

Programme

Despite facing unexpected challenges, the project was completed ahead of programme.
