The design and construction contract was awarded to an alliance comprising; Fletcher Construction, Higgins Construction, Hick Bros (as a Sub-Alliance partner performing the earthworks and drainage scope), Beca, Coffey and NZTA. The Hamilton Section of the Waikato Expressway identified by the Government as “Roads of National Significance” is a 22km long stretch of new expressway extending from the Horotiu area in the north and linking into Cambridge Road at Tamahere south of Hamilton. It has multiple interchanges and bridges.

The Hick Bros scope includes: 4.2 million m3 of high quality certified earthworks, multiple cross culverts and geotechnical drainage, wetland ponds, swales the entire 22km length of roading, construction and monitoring/maintenance of environmental controls including participation in the design phase.

Project highlights

Health & Safety

Use of GPS machine control and drone survey resulted in a significant H&S risk reduction due to less surveyors working around moving machinery

Value Added Engineering

The most complex reinforced earth wall on this project was located in Sector 7, south of Cambridge Road. Built out along the edge of a gully to support the northbound lanes of the new expressway alignment, it was approximately 330m long and was built up in 0.5m layers of sand with high strength grid in between layers. We delivered the wall by the fixed completion date, despite a final design not being available when our planning for its construction had begun.

Cultural

Hick Bros worked closely with local authorities including local iwi for site ceremonies and observation work particularly around the kumara pit sites on the northern end of the project. Hick Bros directly employed 3 Tainui Kaitiaki for observations with many more Tainui involved in the construction of the project.
