Hick Bros, in collaboration with JV partners Spartan, is thrilled to contribute to the Harapaki Wind Farm, a nationally significant venture vital for New Zealand's renewable energy goals. The project encompasses 41 turbines, 28 kilometers of roads, 70 kilometers of cables, approximately 1.1 million cubic meters of earthworks, and 147 sediment ponds. Leveraging expertise gained from previous work with Meridian, Hick Bros successfully navigated challenging conditions, including record wet weather events, to deliver earthworks and critical infrastructure.

Innovative approaches, such as using simulators for pre-employment screening and operator training, have played a key role. The commitment to reducing the project's carbon footprint is evident in monthly reporting and initiatives like redesigning road alignments to save time, quantity, cost, and carbon. Notable reductions include a 10% carbon saving from earthworks volume reduction and 105 tonnes of saved concrete pipe, cutting 30 tonnes of CO2. Approximately 20 tonnes of unused materials were donated to the local community.

Environmental compliance, especially concerning the project's proximity to forty-three wetlands, has been paramount. Special management strategies were implemented for Ecological Interest Areas, Recommended Areas of Protection, and Outstanding Natural Features. Cultural monitors were engaged full time due to the site's cultural and archaeological significance, ensuring adherence to cultural and environmental standards throughout the project.
