Te Uku Wind Farm, located south of Raglan Township in the Waikato, marked a significant milestone as the first wind farm in the upper North Island. The civil works package for this ambitious project, executed between November 2009 and October 2010, encompassed the construction of access roads, foundations, and associated facilities across four existing farms in challenging terrain.

Key highlights of the major construction contract included moving a staggering 800,000m³ of earth, establishing a purpose-built 26km road network for the transportation of heavy wind turbine components, and implementing extensive erosion and sediment control measures involving up to 170 devices. Additionally, an onsite concrete batching plant was set up to support construction activities.

The intricate process also involved crafting 28 turbine foundations, each requiring 1335 tonnes of reinforcing steel and 12,000m³ of concrete. Further tasks encompassed positioning electrical conduits, installing free-issue holding down bolts, and casting onto foundations. The installation of 70km of high-voltage electrical cables connecting turbine sites to the substation, as well as the construction of the substation platform and building foundations, were integral to the project.

Cultural engagement with the local Iwi, Ngati Mahanga, played a pivotal role in the project's success. This included conducting site ceremonies, respecting the Pa Site during observation works, and creating employment opportunities for the local community.
